What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are titanium posts that are inserted into the jawbone, where they act like tooth roots. Once fused with the bone, they can be combined with a connector piece called an abutment to securely hold a crown, dental bridge, or full denture.

Dental implants are the most trusted and reliable solution for missing teeth in dentistry. Dr. Timothy Pfister ensures long-lasting benefits by designing restorations out of the highest quality dental materials.

Dr. Pfister's meticulous attention to detail throughout the process restores the beauty and function to patients' smiles.

How Is a Dental Implant Placed?

Implants are typically made out of titanium, which is biocompatible and naturally fuses with the jawbone to ensure a secure bite. The dentists at Aesthetic Oral Arts in New Hartford, NY, have the advanced training and state-of-the-art dental technology for optimum implant results.

I've been going to Aesthetic Oral Arts for years, and have never been disappointed. Just recently, I broke a tooth and had to have a crown. With the COVID virus, I wasn't sure I'd be able to get in, but I did and they took care of it. I have always had great service from them. The staff is not only professional but very pleasant and accommodating, and Dr. Pfister is fantastic and very personable. I recommend him and them highly.

I didn't know what to expect on my first visit. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased. I'm sorry I didn't get the name of the girl who took care of me, but she was very thorough and kind. All in the office were very pleasant and kind to a new patient. I will refer Aesthetic Oral Arts in the future.

Qualifying for Dental Implants

To make sure dental implants are safe for you, our team will thoroughly assess your candidacy during a consultation at our New Hartford office. Some of the things we will check for include:

Good Dental Health

Dental implant candidates must have healthy remaining teeth and strong gums. If you have oral health problems, like decay or periodontal disease, we can provide the necessary treatments to restore your candidacy.

Good Overall Health

Smoking and certain medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes can put you at higher risk for complications. Make sure to go over your health history with our team so we can ensure dental implants are a safe option.

High Bone Density

Patients need sufficient jawbone tissue to support the dental implant posts. We will assess your bone density using our advanced cone-beam CT scanner and determine if you need preparatory steps like a bone graft or sinus lift.

Is Poor Bone Density Keeping You From Getting Implant Dentures?

Sufficient bone density is a requirement for dental implants. Patients who have been missing most of their teeth for a long time may discover their jaw has already lost too much bone mass to qualify for implant-supported dentures.

If you have been told you lack the bone density needed for implants, Dr. Pfister may have a solution. Even with bone loss, some patients can now qualify for implant-supported dentures using the All-on-4® method.

By strategically placing implants using this method, Dr. Pfister can rebuild smiles and restore a functional bite. The method is life-changing. Patients can walk into our New Hartford practice for implants and walk out with dentures on the same day.

They've been great with all my concerns. They've thoroughly explained everything to me and sent me home with treatment plans so I know what to expect. All of the staff are professional, polite, and very nice. They really go above and beyond. I'm very thankful to have found them considering several dentist I've been to before seemed like they didn't care about my concerns. Keep up the great work!

Dr. Pfister and the team are awesome. I am definitely not a fan of going to the dentist (from some childhood bad experiences a million years ago), and they are patient, kind and understanding. They help me get through it and after I say to myself...that wasn't so bad! Dr. Pfister is caring and genuinely concerned. He even called me the next day to see how I was doing etc etc. Couldn't be happier with him and the whole office.

Dental Implants Treatment Timeline

While each implant procedure is unique, they generally follow along these lines:

Our dentists can perform every stage of dental implant treatment, ensuring you receive high-quality care from start to finish.
Our dentists can perform every stage of dental implant treatment, ensuring you receive high-quality care from start to finish.

Patient Comfort

Before beginning the implant procedure, Dr. Pfister will numb the area so that you will feel comfortable throughout treatment. If you have a sensitive gag reflex or are anxious, Aesthetic Oral Arts offers three levels of sedation and can tailor the level of relaxation to meet your needs.

Implant Placement

Dr. Pfister will have pre-planned placement of your implants based on the 3-D images from your consultation and uses a computerized surgical navigation system to place the titanium implant. This advanced system improves precision and reduces recovery time for patients. In many cases, Dr. Pfister can attach a temporary restoration immediately after placing the implant so you won't have to go without teeth during the healing period.

Healing Period

It generally takes from three to six months for the bone to fuse with the dental implant.

Abutment Placement

If the abutment has not already been placed, it will be attached after the implant has fused with the bone. Small incisions will be made in the gums to connect the abutment. It typically takes a couple of weeks for the gums to heal and create a seal around the abutment.

Impressions

Our dentist will take a custom impression of the treatment area to design your restoration. Depending on the type of restoration you have, Dr. Pfister will either design and create it himself using our in-house CEREC milling technology or work with a trusted partner lab. Dr. Pfister uses high quality, natural-looking dental materials to create lifelike restorations that will serve you for years to come.

Restoration Placement

Dr. Pfister will test how your restoration fits and ensure the bite is comfortable. Once you are pleased with the results, the final restoration will be attached.

Take the First Step!

Immediate Tooth Restoration

While the dental implant treatment timeline is lengthier than some other restorative options, this should not be a major concern. Since we place a temporary dental restoration on the same day as your implant surgery you will not spend this time period without your teeth. While your permanent crown, bridge, or denture will be of superior quality, your temporary prosthetic should function just fine in the meantime.

Caring For Your Dental Implants

The care instructions for dental implants are very similar to the care you should provide for your natural teeth.

The most important step is practicing good oral hygiene on a daily basis. Thorough dental care can prevent serious complications during your recovery period. I can also protect your teeth in the years to come.

We also recommend attending a biannual check-up at our New Hartford practice. This way our team can identify potential problems early on and provide the proper treatment.
